Suncare with Nobel Prize winning technology on Suncoast View

Every eight minutes someone is diagnosed with skin cancer leading to May being the official month of Melanoma Awareness. It makes sense to drive home the importance of protection for prevention… and to mention, eh em that Melanoma is the number one diagnosed cancer in the United States.

A few times a month I travel to Florida and sit in to host Suncoast View with my favorite TV family- Stephanie, Bobo, Linda and Joey. Each visit I am amazed at how fast my skin shows the signs of sun damage. No matter how much sunscreen I apply or how wide the brim of my hat is…I’m starting to see some spots appearing on the left side of my face, arm, and chest. All the natives shake their head and say “yep that’s from driving” or “you can’t get away from it down here”. NO WAY, I’m just not going to bow down to the Sunshine State’s evil branding of sun spots. Also, with one in eight being diagnosed so frequently I’m seriously concerned with the possibility of skin cancer. So, I did my research and realize Europe has been way ahead with sun care supplements, creams, lasers….??? Why are we so behind in the U.S.?

Well, thanks to Isdin we now have Europe’s #1 sun and skin care collection now available in the states. We chat about this amazing brand and four seriously potent and GENIUS products on the show today. All products can be found at www.Isdin.com/US

#WORKOUT WEDNESDAY: Nantucket-ing with The Class

Look at it out there.

It’s just…wow.

The kind of day that makes you want to pack up, head someplace like Nantucket, order your fill of oysters and drink beers until the sun goes down.

Well, good news: I found the next best thing…

Prepare to soak in the sunbeams at Supta Yoga, a rustic little piece of of well-summered Nantucket where The Class created by Taryn Toomey will be popping up in this weekend. Samantha Moriarty will be teaching.

You shake, you pulse, you bounce, and you use sound to break open and activate stagnant “layers” in the body where stress, tension and emotions are stored.

The challenging movement creates contracting and release age old emotional habits stored in the body. Cardio blasts flush the system to create new fertile space for positive change unveiling untapped strength in every possible sense of the word.

Look alive, though–this one-of-a-kind mind/body experience will only be around this weekend.

Nantucket giveth, and Nantucket taketh away.

When: Sunday, August 21st at 11:00am

Where: Supta Yoga 9 Amelia Drive Nantucket, MA 02554

#WORKOUT WEDNESDAY: Sunday Funday

When you strip away the whole “day of rest” thing, Sunday’s really just another day to workout.

Earn that extra Mimosa at brunch, and set the tone for the rest of your week with a FREE Pilates mat class.

The blink-and-it’s-gone Real Pilates pop-up workout will be held in SoHo at the Cadillac House on 330 Hudson Street. I’ll be teaching the 10am class, and trust me when I say it will be a total body workout worth waking up early for.

Don’t forget your mat.

#WORKOUT WEDNESDAY: Guns Against Gun Violence

On Monday, June 20th, 2016, nearly 200 members of the fitness community came together for “Guns Against Gun Violence”, a campaign conceived by The Sweat Life Founder Aly Teich in  collaboration with photographer Chris Fanning, and fundraising platform Spotfund, in response to the massacre at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando and in support of all victims of gun violence.

The Real Pilates crew and I are proud to use the strength of our ‘guns’ to make a symbolic statement against gun violence to show that love will always be stronger than hate.

Nonviolence is only for the brave men and women of the world because it requires courage — courage to love the beauty of life, beauty of humanity and the beauty of the world. To become a true united front, one must abandon all notions of ‘otherness’ and instead embrace ‘togetherness’. As fitness instructors our job is to help people change the way they see things within themselves. Global betterment is similar in the sense that it is a mental process, not one that requires huge sums of money or a high level of authority. Change has to be psychological. It’s imperative that we stay persistent in educating humanity on how similar we are than different. The language of the heart is mankind’s common language.

#WORKOUT WEDNESDAY: Take Me to Church

Gyms in NY have gotten a little fancy. Rock climbing walls. Live DJ-sets. Attendants spritzing you with 68.3-degree Himalayan rainwater.

But you—you’d rather get back to simple in-your-face, muscle-burning basics.

Introducing New York City’s best-kept secret: YG Studios, an innovative bare-bones fitness studio concept with classes that fall somewhere past “hair on your chest” but nowhere near “blind you for life” in terms of strength.

By connecting health and fitness enthusiasts (you and me) with A-list trainers and fitness instructors (aka gurus) that can best serve them, YG Studios eliminates the need to go to a boutique studio –thus eliminating the need to pay crazy prices to get a good workout. (Bonus — classes cost $28!).

There are eight different locations throughout NYC. No, they’re not gyms–but add a few yoga mats and weights to any loft in Manhattan, and you can get your sweat on, hard. It’s fitness without the frills. Sure the lemon infused water, and complimentary green apples on your way out the door are great but real fitness isn’t really about any of that. It’s about the workout, and the people leading it.YG Studios is built around the concept that an extraordinary workout speaks for itself, and the foundation of that workout is an extraordinary instructor. You won’t find any ho-hum, run-of-the-mill instructors here, just highly qualified super-stars doing their thing the way they see fit.

If you’re looking to start training like an actual football player using footballs as stability and agility props, show up for the GridIron Power class with former professional Women’s League tackle football player Jay D. Dantzler.

But if you’re just looking to burn off last night’s steakhouse visit, try the TGIF with former Tracey Anderson Master Trainer Jason Bayus–it’s an intense cardio conditioning class that combines innovative toning sequences with intervals of easy-to-follow dance breaks. If he likes you, he’ll even yell at you a little. (He means well).

I recently took the “Barre Burn” with Jessica Bailey who used to teach at Physique57, Exhale, and Pure Yoga. At this point in her career, the girl could teach a barre class with her eyes closed, her cueing and form correction was spot on.

Barre Burn at West Park Presbyterian Church
Barre Burn at West Park Presbyterian Church

The class was held at West Park Presbyterian Church on West 86th street. I must have passed it at least three times, thinking to myself, there’s no way the workout is being held here. Low and behold that’s exactly where it was, head up the four flights of hundred year old stairs and you’ll see discover a beautiful space with high vaulted ceilings, windows that allowed for just the right amount of natural light to shine through, wood floors, and some brick walls. No fancy juice bars or towel service here. I later found out the Shen Wei Dance Company practices, so if it’s good enough for Shen Wei, it’s good enough for me.

The old brick walls of the church were used in place of a ballet barre. Having no barres to grip onto for dear life made the lower body series we did instantly much harder. We then moved on to an upper body series using 3lb weights, core work including planks, pushups, and a variety of abdominal exercises. By the end of class Jessica had me sweating like a Baptist preacher.

The great thing about a back-to-basics workout is that it doesn’t require much. A few weights. A mat. Good music. Instructors.
